Description

Site of former two storey terrace block containing three houses, possibly dating from around 1850-60, located to the south of Portaferry town centre fronting The Strand with the front elevation facing roughly south-west.

When surveyed in 1997, the block was described as plain with rendered and painted front elevation. Number 4, at the north-west end of the block, had a plain sheeted timber door to the left with a three pane timber window with top hung upper opener to the right. Two two pane timber windows with top hung upper openers occupied the first floor. Number 3 had a similar arrangement but handed. Number 2 had a larger front elevation with an almost central timber and glazed door, a two pane timber window to the left, and a large coach way to the right with plain sheeted timber double doors. All three houses had similar first floor windows, though those of Number 2 were unevenly spaced. Each property appeared to have two stairwell windows to the rear, the upper of which was very small and set close to the eaves. Numbers 3 and 4 appeared to have single storey lean-to extensions. The rear façades of each house were rendered. The entire grouping had a Bangor blue slate pitched roof with four brown brick chimney stacks, cast iron gutters and downspouts, eaves course, and a skylight to the rear of the roof of Number 2.

Valuation maps of circa 1835-38 and 1864 reveal that much of the south east end of the terrace was rebuilt between these dates, suggesting these houses were built during the 1850s. In 1861 Number 2 was occupied by Peter Lewen, Number 3 by Hugh Nelson, and Number 4 by Richard Sloane. The houses were demolished around 2004. Nothing but rubble remained on the site when visited in September 2005.
