6 The Strand, Portaferry, Co Down, BT22 1PE

A plain two storey terrace house of approximately 1840, located on The Strand to the southwest of Portaferry town centre. The property has undergone significant modernisation and has lost much of its original architectural character.

The front façade is symmetrical and faces roughly southwest. The ground floor features a timber panel door with plain fanlight at its centre, flanked on either side by a single sash window. The first floor contains three two-pane PVC windows. The front is finished in plain render and painted. The exposed east gable is blank and also finished in plain render. The roof is pitched to the front and covered with Bangor blue slates, with two Velux windows inserted to the front slope. A yellow brick chimney stack to the southeast features bracketed corbelling and uniform pots. The eaves course is finished with cast iron gutters and downspouts.

The rear façade has been substantially altered with modern window and door openings on both ground and first floors. A large flat-roofed dormer now occupies the entire rear roof area. The rear is finished in roughcast and partly painted.

Historical evidence suggests the property may have replaced an earlier, larger two storey dwelling shown on valuation maps of the 1830s, which was noted as very old and in poor repair. A photograph of The Strand from around 1910, taken before recent modernisation, shows the house with a distinctly late Georgian appearance, supporting the dating of approximately 1840. Valuation records of 1861 note the property was then occupied by James Moore.
