Description

1 Ferry Street is a plain, two storey terrace house located on the west side of Ferry Street in Portaferry, with Portaferry Methodist Church immediately to the north. The building probably dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, though a structure stood on this site from at least 1799 and valuation records from around 1835 confirm the presence of a two storey dwelling then occupied by Robert McCappin. A Barbara McCappin is recorded as resident in the 1861 valuation returns, suggesting some continuity of occupation, though the current building's plain, sharp appearance suggests it may represent a substantial remodelling or rebuilding, possibly in the mid to late 19th century or early 20th century.

The front façade faces east and is asymmetrical. On the ground floor, to the left, is a recent timber panel door in traditional style with a plain fanlight. To the right stands a paired sliding sash window set on a single cill and separated by a narrow brick pier. The first floor contains three windows: a single window to the left and a pair matching the ground floor arrangement to the right. All first floor windows sit on a cill course. Prominent electric cabling runs under the eaves.

The rear of the building features a two storey lean-to extension with a window of modern frame to the first floor. The main rear façade has a sash window to the first floor on the left side, though the lower half of the rear façade was not visible for inspection. The gabled roof is covered with Bangor blue slates and clay ridge tiles. A Velux window lights the rear slope. Two rendered chimney stacks with assorted pots rise from the roof. Cast iron guttering and downspout are present, and an eaves course marks the wall head.

The historical evidence suggests that much of the west side of Ferry Street was rebuilt during the mid 19th century, though whether this particular building is substantially the same structure recorded in earlier sources or a later replacement cannot be determined from the building itself alone.
