Description

3 Ferry Street is a small, plain two-storey terrace house, likely built between 1840 and 1859. It stands on the west side of Ferry Street in Portaferry, south of the town square, with its front façade facing east.

The front of the house is finished in lined render and painted. The doorway, which has been shifted to the right in recent years (it was originally central), is fitted with a circa 1940s–50s panelled and glazed door. To the left of the doorway are two sash windows on the ground floor. The first floor has two similar but narrower sash windows, set wide apart.

The rear façade is plain unpainted render. A large, full-height flat-roofed extension with modern windows and door extends from the left side. On the main rear façade to the right of this extension are windows with modern frames at both ground and first-floor levels.

The gabled roof is covered in Bangor blue slates with clay ridge tiles. Rendered chimney stacks rise to the eaves on both the north and south sides, shared with neighbouring houses. An eaves course runs around the building. The rainwater goods are mostly PVC. The house is noticeably shorter than its terrace neighbours on either side.

Historical records suggest the site held a modest single-storey dwelling in the 1830s that was exempt from rating. The valuation map of circa 1861 shows a plan similar to the present building, indicating the current house was probably present by then. At that time it was occupied by John Logan. The property lies within a conservation area and was delisted in 2006.
