14 Ferry Street, Portaferry, Co Down, BT22 1PB

A small, well-detailed two-storey terrace shop of approximately 1861, located in the middle of Ferry Street on its east side in Portaferry. The building has an interesting history as the former Nugent estate office.

The front façade facing west is asymmetrical. The ground floor features a plain sheeted timber door on the right, with a tripartite sliding sash window to its left, fitted with Georgian panes and a stone cill. A modern plastic shop sign is positioned above the window and door. The first floor contains two smaller sash windows with Georgian panes, and a traditional-style projecting shop sign. The façade is finished in lined render and painted.

A single-storey lean-to section extends to the rear, which was not fully accessible to survey but was observed to have two sash windows to the first floor, matching those of the front. The roof is gabled and covered with Bangor blue slates. Two rendered chimney stacks rise from the roof. The rainwater goods are a mixture of PVC and cast iron.

The site is recorded as occupied on Patrick O'Hare's map of 1799, though the present building probably dates from around 1861. The second valuation map and accompanying valuation returns from that period clearly indicate the ground was in the process of being built on at that time. The property served as the Nugent estate office for many years. Adjacent number 16 functioned as the local police station from circa 1861–1862 until 1909, after which it operated as a Post Office until 1990.
