Description

13 Ferry Street, Portaferry is a single storey vernacular terrace house of possible mid 19th century construction, built on a slope on the west side of Ferry Street. The building is set at split level, with its front at a significantly lower elevation than the adjoining property to the south (the Slip Inn).

The front (east) elevation features a plain timber sheeted front door set at a notably lower level than the adjacent windows, reached by climbing four steps with a landing set at right angles to the door. To the right and left of the door are modern two pane timber windows, the one to the left being considerably taller. A return to the right, which abuts the rear, belongs to the adjoining Slip Inn. To the first floor is one wide flat roofed dormer with two groups of three modern windows, faced with timber sheeting. At lower ground floor level is a plain door leading into a semi-basement used as a store for the Slip Inn.

The rear façade is rendered and painted with concrete cills. The exposed north facing gable has two small modern two pane timber windows, the one to the right notably narrower than that to the left. The pitched roof is covered with modern concrete ribbed tiles and is punctuated by three brown brick chimneys with matching pots. The gable is finished with cement render and a parapet. Cast iron guttering and downspouts are in place, with prominent electrical cabling visible.

The building has been substantially altered, retaining only period detail in its basic form. Modern window frames and a concrete tiled roof are later additions.

Historical records indicate the site was marked as 'waste' on Patrick O'Hare's map of 1799 and remained undeveloped on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. The valuation town plan of circa 1861 shows what appears to be this building, then divided into two properties held by Robert Lowry and John Jeffrey. A further small dwelling to the south has since been amalgamated with the pub. By 1902, the two smaller dwellings had been consolidated to form the present property.
