Description

This is a large, derelict garage building, likely dating from the 1920s. It is located to the east of Ferry Street in Portaferry, set back from the adjacent terrace buildings. The building has an irregular, rhomboid plan, measuring approximately 16.5 meters south to north and widening to 24 meters north, with a short depth of roughly 8 meters. A substantial portion of the original building, located at the northern end, has been demolished.

The south and east elevations are obscured by surrounding properties. The west elevation is primarily in roughcast render, with the upper quarter clad in corrugated metal. Features include a large vehicle doorway with a timber sliding door, a tall breeze block wall, and a blocked-up window. The north elevation is almost entirely corrugated metal, featuring a large vehicle doorway with metal-sheeted double doors positioned to the right of center. The roof is curved and also clad in corrugated metal.

The building originally contained a Belfast Truss roof, a design developed in the mid-19th century for efficient, lightweight, and long-span roofs. The design originated with McTear & Co. of Belfast in 1866, with further development by Anderson & Co. from 1886, and a later “Mk II” version in 1896. The term "Belfast truss" is now commonly used to describe similar timber bowstring trusses irrespective of precise design details.

The building was last used as a commercial garage and is now vacant and derelict. It is considered to have industrial archaeological interest and is situated within a conservation area. It was surveyed as part of a wider Belfast Roof Truss survey.
