Description
This is a small, single-storey garage with a distinctive Belfast Truss roof, built around 1930. It is situated on the corner of Hanover Square and Urbal Road in Coagh, within an urban setting. The garage is a long, rectangular building, prominently located at a crossroads adjacent to substantial Victorian houses, and is of local interest.
The front, north-facing gable end has a square-headed window with a timber casement to the left, and a large square-headed door to the right. The east-facing side elevation features four square-headed openings, now obscured by timber or corrugated clear plastic sheeting. The west-facing side elevation has no openings. The rear, south-facing elevation is largely hidden by foliage and is not visible. The external walls are painted render to the gables, and corrugated metal to the east and west sides. The roof is curved corrugated metal. Rainwater goods are cast-iron. A large tarmac area fronts the building, with a pavement alongside. The surrounding area is a mixed development of buildings dating from the early Victorian period to the mid-twentieth century.
The garage was constructed sometime between 1929 and 1935 on land belonging to the house immediately northwest of the site. Previously, the plot had been occupied by three small dwellings, which had fallen into ruin by the 1880s. The building was originally occupied by an R.J. Ferguson, later followed by a Richard McGaw in the 1950s and 1960s. The building is of industrial archaeological interest and was surveyed as part of a wider Belfast Roof Truss survey.
