Description

10 Urbal Road, Coagh

This is a rare example of a terraced house from the 1920s, unusually complete and in original condition. It is one of four houses in the terrace, all of which survive in similarly original state, sharing significant group value.

The building is an end-of-terrace, two-bay, two-storey cottage built around 1928, with a single-storey lean-to return to the rear. It is rectangular in plan. The roof is pitched artificial slate without fascia or bargeboards. The walls are unpainted dashed rendered. A single-storey outbuilding stands to the rear of the yard, connected to the cottage by a timber and plastic carport shared with the neighbouring house at number 12 Urbal Road.

The front northwest elevation faces directly onto Urbal Road. A square-headed timber doorway is positioned left of centre, accessed by a single concrete step. The door is tongue and grooved timber with a rectangular glazed panel. To the right of the doorway on the ground floor is a single square-headed window. Above on the first floor is another square-headed window and an ocular window with concrete sill and hood. The main windows are painted timber sliding sash with concrete sills: six-over-one panes to the ground floor and three-over-one to the upper floor. The northeast gable elevation has no openings. The rear southeast elevation has two windows to the upper floor and one to the lower, following the same pattern as the front. The external walls throughout are dashed render. Rainwater goods are a mixture of cast iron and plastic. A brick chimney with profiled stepped capping and three clay pots is located on the party wall and is shared with number 12 Urbal Road.

The terrace was built in 1927–28 by Jonathan R. Elliott. The original occupants were Thomas McIvor, David Mitchell, James McKnight and John Stirrup; Mr. Stirrup occupied this particular house. The building is well proportioned and detailed, representing a characteristic example of suburban cottage development of its period.

The terrace is located on the outskirts of Coagh, with a short terrace of neighbouring houses opposite and to the southwest along the same building line. To the northeast stand commercial buildings, with a 1930s school and a fine 19th-century church further out on the edge of the village. The surrounding residential buildings are mainly two-storey and of similar scale, with many houses featuring low-walled gardens to the front. The house is street-fronted.
