Description
This is a substantial and well-proportioned five-arch cut-stone road bridge, known as Coagh Bridge, that represents an important element of the late nineteenth-century civil engineering heritage of Cookstown. The bridge, built between 1840 and 1859, spans the Ballinderry River at the southern end of Bridgend Road and the bottom of the village's main street.
The bridge is faced with ashlar sandstone, with a cut-stone capping that slopes outwards and is flush with the wall surface. The inner wall at road level is constructed from squared and snecked stone. The arches are segmental and feature rock-faced cut-stone voussoirs. A continuous cut-stone stringcourse runs above the arches. There are rounded and stepped cutwaters to the south, located between the arches, with rock-faced stone at the base, cut stone at the top, and smooth domed capping. The bridge is approximately 12 metres wide, with a pavement to the north.
Although a bridge is depicted on this site on Taylor’s and Skinner’s map from 1777 and on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833-34, the present regular structure likely replaced an earlier bridge around the 1850s. The bridge is constructed of good quality cut stone in a robust style and has been well maintained. Its setting has been generally well preserved, situated on the edge of the settlement. This bridge is of industrial archaeological interest.
