Description

5 The Strand is a plain, low-proportioned two-storey terrace house of possible pre-1834 construction, now much altered and with little architectural interest. It is located within the terrace fronting The Strand, to the south-west of Portaferry town centre.

The front south-west façade is asymmetrical. At ground floor level is an almost central timber panel entrance door with a single window to either side, both now fitted with PVC frames. Two similar windows appear at first floor, but these are shorter and almost square in proportion, set very close to the eaves. The front façade is finished in plain, unpainted render with paint used to simulate a short plinth. The rear façade appears to be mainly harled and contains at least one window to both first and ground floor levels, both with modern frames. The roof is gabled, finished with Bangor blue slates to the front and shaped asbestos slates to the rear. A brown brick chimney with uniform pots rises to the gable of number 4.

The building retains an eaves course, cast iron gutters and downspout.

Historical records indicate that whilst The Strand as a whole was developed by 1799, valuation maps from circa 1835–38 and 1864 show that much of the south-east end of the terrace was rebuilt between these dates. This dwelling may be an exception to this pattern. Its low proportions suggest pre-mid-19th-century construction, and its dimensions match those of the building on this site recorded in the first valuation of circa 1835, when it was occupied by a person named Peter Hagan. In 1864 the resident was recorded as Richard Sloane. The property is within a conservation area and was delisted on 20 February 2006.
