Fountain at the slip, Strangford, Co Down

This is a cast iron water fountain dating from the early 20th century, likely between 1920 and 1939. Water fountains of this type were commonly placed in public areas to provide a water supply for the entire village, before individual houses had running water, and this is a rare surviving example with significant local interest. Its group value is recognised alongside another listed fountain at Quay Lane in Strangford.

The fountain features a fluted column topped with a domical cap and an acorn finial. A spring-loaded knob on the side operates the fountain. The original bucket support at the base remains in place, although it is fractured. The fountain is situated in a prominent location in the centre of Strangford, close to the slipway used by the ferry to Portaferry.

The fountain is connected to a pressurised mains water supply, which was installed when such systems became available. It is of industrial archaeological interest and lies within the Strangford conservation area. It is owned by central government and provides a historic use as a pump.
