Description

The fountain, located in Silent Valley, Annalong, Newry, County Down, is a typical example of those found in other parts of Northern Ireland. While not in its original location, it may be the only operational fountain in Northern Ireland, and is situated near the Silent Valley reservoir, where the pressurised water supply originated for its former site in Belfast, with a backdrop of the Mourne mountains.

The fountain was installed as an ornamental feature around 1990, and later connected to a water supply, now operating in full working order. It is believed to have been moved from Belfast, where it was originally installed in the early twentieth century, coinciding with the introduction of a pressurised mains water supply. The fountain features a fluted column, a lion-head spout, a fluted domed top with an acorn finial, and an intact bucket bracket at its base. The base is bolted to a concrete plinth and includes a drainage outlet. A cast inscription at the base reads 'Glenfield Coy? Limited Kilmarnock', identifying the manufacturer of similar fountains.

Further details are provided in the Environment Heritage Service (EHS) Report ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey’ by Fred Hammond, January 1997, specifically Pump no. 79. The fountain’s date of construction is estimated to be between 1920 and 1939. The listing covers the pump itself.

It possesses architectural interest due to its style, proportions, ornamentation, setting, and group value. It also holds historical interest for its social, cultural, economic, and local significance, and is considered relatively rare. It is owned by Central Government.
