Lime dosing plant, Silent Valley Reservoir, Head Road, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4PU

This lime dosing plant, built in 1985 by the Department of the Environment Water Service, demonstrates an attempt to harmonize its utilitarian design with the surrounding architecture. It holds group value from an architectural perspective and is recorded for its historical and technical significance in reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance water quality. Situated south of the 1950 Screening House, the plant is a tall, square building with a one-story projection to the north, constructed from roughly dressed granite blocks laid in irregular courses upon a projecting base. The building has flat concrete roofs with surrounding parapet walls. It is embellished with stepped quoins and flush string courses, all crafted from sawn ashlar granite. The structure's west wall features a large vehicle entrance and a smaller pedestrian door, both framed with ashlar granite surrounds. A ‘1985’ datestone is positioned above the pedestrian door. The building’s design is similar to a dosing plant near Ballynahinch. The plant is of industrial archaeological interest.
