Fountain situated in, Quay Lane, Strangford, Co. Down

This water fountain, situated in Quay Lane, Strangford, County Down, was installed by the Rural District Council circa 1935. It stands in a prominent position within the Strangford conservation area and serves as a reminder of a time when public sources were the primary means of obtaining drinking water. The fountain, which still functions, is of a style similar to standard Glenfield and Kennedy designs, featuring a plain, shaped column with fluted decoration, a fluted cap, and an acorn finial. It was apparently originally supplied by a well at Tullyratty. According to an EHS report by Fred Hammond from January 1997 ("Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey," Pump no. 25), it is of industrial archaeological interest. A local resident reported its removal in 2006, prompting local protest and its subsequent return. It is now no longer connected to a water supply. Though without a maker’s name, it is notable for its style, proportions, ornamentation, setting and group value and demonstrates local social, cultural and economic importance.
