Lime Kiln, Ballywhite, Portaferry, Co Down

A large, disused lime kiln, likely built in the mid-19th century (circa 1860-1879), is constructed of rubble and set into a hillside just south of the main drive to Ballywhite House, approximately two miles northwest of Portaferry. It is a rare surviving example within the area and benefits from an unspoiled setting. The kiln features a central fireplace opening with red brick dressings to the deeply recessed fire area, and the front façade, facing west, is battered. The side walls are blank, while the rear wall is obscured by an earth ramp. Due to dense undergrowth, the sides, top and rear of the kiln are not visible. This lime kiln is of industrial archaeological interest and holds local historical significance, reflecting social, cultural, and economic aspects of the area. The listing also includes associated gates and gate piers.
