Curlew Cottage, 7 Lough Shore Road, Ballyhenry, Portaferry, Co Down, BT22 1PD

The remains of a small, single-story vernacular cottage, likely built in the mid-19th century (1840-1859), stand on the shores of Strangford Lough, approximately a mile north of Portaferry. The cottage is now dilapidated and in a dangerous condition.

The front, west-facing elevation features a central door and two window openings, showing remnants of timber frames. A further window opening on the far left is heavily obscured by vegetation. A small, lean-to garage remains attached to the south gable. The rear of the cottage has a window opening to the left with dilapidated elements of a sliding sash and case frame. A small, flat-roofed extension, pebbledash rendered, with modern window frames, is visible towards the centre right. The original roof has lost its slates, exposing the roof structure and laths. Two rendered chimney stacks remain. The surrounding garden is now overgrown.

The interior is largely exposed to the elements and totally derelict.

A building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1860, but not on earlier maps from 1834. The cottage was occupied as a house during a survey in November 1970, but is now derelict as of August 1997. Supporting documentation includes Ordnance Survey maps from 1860 and 1899-1900, a Second (Griffith's) valuation from 1861, and related records held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.
