Description
Marlfield is a 1½ and 2-storey T-shaped roughcast house with yellow brick chimneys and slated gabled roofs, located in rural grounds accessed by a private lane.
The 2-storey block faces north-east, with a roof of Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses between fireclay gable copings. Three yellow brick chimneys are present, each surmounted by two replacement octagonal-section pots of 19th century appearance. The walls are roughcast and rendered, painted white, with replacement cast iron rainwater goods. The main entrance, off-centre, contains a new rectangular timber panelled door replacing the original sheeted door with fanlight. The north-east elevation has four first-floor windows and three ground-floor windows (two to the left of the doorway, one to the right), all of which are rectangular timber sliding sash windows, vertically hung, 2 over 2 with horns and horizontal glazing bars.
The north-west gable of the 2-storey block is similarly finished in roughcast rendered walls, painted white. It contains one small first-floor window, sashed 1 over 1, and two lean-to projections at ground floor with slated roofs and rectangular timber tongued and grooved sheeted doors to their sides. A smaller lean-to store has a small perspex glazed window opening.
The south-west (rear) elevation of the 2-storey block matches the north-east in roof, walling, and rainwater goods. The 5-bay elevation features a projecting lean-to porch at the second bay from the left. Windows are sashed as those on the north-east elevation, except the first and third bays of the ground floor from the left and two porch windows, which are sashed 2 over 2 with vertical glazing bars. The porch contains a new ledged timber ½-door.
The 1½-storey block returns forward to the right of the 2-storey block's side wall, which contains a small 1 over 1 sashed window. The south-west gable of the 1½-storey block is roughcast with a yellow brick chimney surmounted by two replacement pots at the apex. The ground floor has one 4 over 4 sashed window. The first floor has a central timber glazed and sheeted door with sidelight leading onto a small balcony with wrought iron railings, and to its left is a small 2 over 2 sashed window.
The south-east elevation of the 1½-storey block has wet dash render, painted white, covering original brick dressings. The central opening originally contained a steel sliding door, now replaced by a pair of glazed and sheeted timber doors with small-paned timber sidelights, new fluted plain pilasters, and a tongued and grooved sheeted frieze, leading onto a new stone paved ramp. Two windows flank this opening on each side, containing new timber sashes 4 over 4 with horns.
The north-east gable of the 1½-storey block has similar openings, finishes, and chimney to the south-west gable.
The setting comprises the building's own grounds in a rural area. The main entrance front faces a private lane, set back behind a small rockery garden with crazy paving across the front. A low stone boundary wall with cement rendered coping and a wrought iron pedestrian gate between square rubble stone piers enclose this area. The south-east elevation faces the main road, set back slightly behind a small stone paved area bounded by a stone plinth wall with new decorative iron railings. The rear elevation opens directly onto a small stone crazy paved court bounded by low rubble stone walls with cement rendered coping. The court leads to a gravelled driveway bordered by flower beds, with a small grassed area to the west. The south-east boundary comprises a new rubble stone wall with a pair of ironwork gates between new square piers. Mature trees and hedges border the north boundary. A small single-storey shed with white painted roughcast walls, hipped slated roof, a timber fixed light window, and a timber sheeted door stands along the north boundary to the rear of the house.
