Cottage, 6 Mountain Road, Ballyhenry, Portaferry, Co Down, BT22 1PL

This is a long, narrow, single-storey cottage, likely dating from the 1880s. It is now derelict and situated in an isolated setting within the former Nugent estate, to the west of Mountain Road, approximately a mile north of Portaferry in County Down. The cottage is built of random rubble with red brick dressings and a rendered finish, though it is now in very poor condition. The asymmetrical north-facing front elevation has four openings, largely devoid of original door and window frames. The doorway is off-centre and lacks a door. To the left of the doorway is an opening with a segmental arch above, a stone sill, and remnants of a casement window. Two windows are positioned to the right of the doorway, also with missing frames. The south-facing rear elevation has two windows to the left, an off-centre doorway, and a single window to the far right; the window bays here are narrower than those on the front elevation and lack segmental arch heads. Both gable ends are blank. The cottage has a pitched roof covered with Bangor blue slates, and the fragmentary remains of two red brick chimney stacks are present. The window openings suggest it was originally built in the later nineteenth century. It appeared abandoned when surveyed in November 1970. Historical records including Ordnance Survey maps from 1860 and 1899-1900, and the Second (Griffith's) valuation of 1861, refer to the building.
