19 Ballyfounder Road, Killydressy, Portaferry, Co Down, BT22 1RE

This is a small, single-storey vernacular cottage likely built in the mid-19th century, with an attic and a large modern extension to the rear. It is located on the southern side of Ballyfounder Road, approximately three miles southeast of Portaferry.

The asymmetrical front facade faces roughly north. A plain timber-sheeted half-door, possibly a former stable door, is situated on the right-hand side. To the left of this are two timber casement windows with horizontal and vertical astragals. A window is also present on the east gable, and a small lean-to extension projects from the west gable, featuring a small two-pane window facing west and a timber-sheeted door. The lean-to’s roof is corrugated asbestos. The rear of the cottage is largely hidden by a large, modern, flat-roofed extension built on a slight gradient, incorporating various modern timber windows and a plain-sheeted door.

The original section of the house is harled and whitewashed, while the modern extension is rendered and painted. The main house has a gabled roof covered in Bangor blue slates, and a single rendered chimney stack with pots is centrally positioned. A large, modern, slate-clad, flat-roofed dormer is situated at the rear, with a modern timber window. There is a slight overhang at the eaves, approximately 30cm in depth. PVC gutters and downspouts are also present.

An Ordnance Survey map from 1834 shows a slightly smaller building on the site, which was not recorded in the first valuation survey. A slightly larger house appears on the revised Ordnance Survey map of 1858-60, and it is likely this corresponds to the original section of the current dwelling.
