Description
This is a long, single-story vernacular dwelling likely built before 1834, situated at the end of a lane approximately three miles southeast of Portaferry, County Down. The property faces south and has an asymmetrical front façade. A small lean-to porch, with a very shallow pitch, extends from the front; it features a timber-sheeted door on its east face, a fixed light window on its south face, and a steel six-pane window on its west face. To the left of the porch are two widely spaced sash windows, and to the right are three similar windows. The east and west gables are blank, but the east gable has a water tank set on top of a small block-built store.
The rear elevation has three windows similar to those at the front, but with horizontal astragals. There are also two small, flat-roofed extensions with modern timber windows and a glazed door to the western extension. The façade is finished with rough cast and painted; some of the rear render has broken away to reveal random rubble construction. The gabled roof is covered with asbestos slates. Stone parapets and four rendered chimney stacks, each with a single pot (on the first and third stacks from the west), are present. The building has an eaves course, cast iron gutters, and down spouts. Adjacent outbuildings are also part of the site.
A building is shown on this site on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map and all subsequent maps, indicating that the present house likely corresponds to the building depicted in 1834. It was not, however, recorded during the valuation of 1838. The property appears on the 1860 revised Ordnance Survey map and is included in Griffith's valuation of 1861.
