Description
The site comprises the remains of an early Christian church and associated graveyard, located on a hillside slope to the east of the Ballyquintin Road, approximately four miles southeast of Portaferry. Very little of the original church survives, with only low, broken remnants of random rubble walls being visible. A modern open-air stone altar, covered by a small Bangor blue slate roof supported by four columns of cemented round stones, now stands within these walls. To the west of the former church, a series of rough stones are arranged in an approximate grid pattern, appearing too closely spaced to denote individual graves. Recent landscaping of the site includes round stone walls, concrete steps, metal railings, and paved areas. The site is adjacent to holy wells.
Local tradition attributes the church to St. Cooey, a 7th-century cleric who reputedly performed penitential exercises and drank at the nearby wells. St. Cooey's identity is unclear, although a recent suggestion proposes that the name "Cooey" may be a corruption of "Mochae," the founder of Nendrum, a significant religious site in the area. Mass was reportedly celebrated at Templecooey until at least the 18th century. The site was depicted as an "old burying ground" on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1834. Local residents undertook landscaping work at the site in 1977. The site is now recorded as derelict and is considered a monument.
