6 Ballyquintin Road, Ballyquintin, Portaferry, Co Down, BT22 1RG

A substantial one and a half storey house of possible pre-1834 origin, situated east of Ballyquintin Road approximately three miles south-east of Portaferry. The building has been recently completely renovated and extended and now functions as a modern dwelling in all practical respects.

The original front façade faced west, but the building is now entered via the east façade, which is asymmetrical. The east elevation features a large off-centre gabled porch with PVC glazed door and large sidelights with moulded chamfered quoins and a simulated flat arch with keystone. Both sides of the porch have single two-pane windows. The porch has a pitched roof with 'Thru-tone' slates, clay ridge tiles, PVC ogee gutters and square down spouts. A two-storey projecting gable to the far left contains two-pane windows to both ground and first floors. Between this gable and the porch is a two-pane window to the ground floor and a smaller two-pane window near the eaves to the first floor. To the right of the porch is a broad three-pane window to the ground floor and a large gabled oriel window or half-dormer to the first floor.

The west façade has an off-centre glazed door with fluted surround and moulded keystone, with two two-pane windows to the left and one to the right. Directly above the door is a window with semi-circular arch head and a moulded sail boat design in render above, all set within a steeply pitched gable.

The north gable has a door to the right on the ground floor and two small windows to the first floor. An attached glass house and single-storey brick building were recently removed from this elevation. The south gable has two two-pane windows to the ground floor and two similar but slightly smaller windows to the first floor.

All façades are finished in unpainted roughcast with a chamfered plinth and in-and-out quoins. The main roof is covered with 'Thru-tone' slates and clay ridge tiles, with PVC ogee gutters and square down spouts. A small Velux window is fitted to the east elevation roof. Two red brick chimney stacks with one pot each are present. Substantial outhouses stand to the north and east.

A building is shown on this site on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834 and on all subsequent maps thereafter. The present house may incorporate the fabric of that shown on the 1834 map, but recent renovation means that the building visible today is essentially modern. The house does not appear in the first valuation records of approximately 1835–38.
