Lime kiln in front of, 62 Portmuck Road, Portmuck, Islandmagee, Larne, Co Antrim

This is a lime kiln, dating from approximately 1800 to 1819, and located in a field bordering Portmuck Road, Islandmagee, County Antrim. It is an example of a formerly common structure, though now typically found in derelict or incomplete condition. The kiln is built into a bank and is constructed of limestone and basalt rubble, set on a rectangular plan. It features a two-centred arch to the front opening, which splayed inwards and contains a recessed arch. The top is grassed over. A charging hole is present, but has been partially covered with wooden boards; the area is fenced off with barbed wire. The kiln appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832 and was used for the small-scale burning of white limestone, also known as chalk, to produce a rough powder for various applications. It stands in a rural location, partly sheltered by trees but easily visible from the road. The structure is recorded as derelict and is of industrial archaeological interest.
