Lime kiln opposite, 5 Ballytober Lane, Islandmagee, Larne, Co Antrim

This is a substantial lime kiln, likely built between 1800 and 1819, situated opposite 5 Ballytober Lane, Islandmagee, County Antrim. It is an example of a once-common structure, notable for its larger size and more regular construction than typically seen. The kiln is now in a derelict and ruinous condition.

The structure is built of roughly coursed limestone, with two kiln openings set in segmental arches in the front face. The kiln to the left has an outer arch and a recessed inner arch, both made of limestone. The kiln to the right features an outer arch and two recessed inner arches, all constructed of red brick. A large buttress supports the front wall between the kiln openings, and the top is finished with a broken parapet. Despite being overgrown, the charging holes remain open. The kiln is located in a rural setting, set into a steeply sloping bank.

It is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832 and was originally built for the burning of limestone - commonly known as chalk - to produce a rough powder for various uses. The site is of industrial archaeological interest and retains its former use as a rural industrial facility.
