Description
This is a two-storey, terraced house built between 1860 and 1879 in the Ballymoney townland, Islandmagee, County Antrim. The main south-facing facade features a front door flanked by two windows on the ground floor, with two dormers above. A ground floor window to the left of the door provides light to a lobby within the adjacent Methodist church, although the roof space above it belongs to this house. The roof is covered with Bangor blue slate in regular courses and includes a single ridge chimney with a smooth, unpainted cement render finish, topped with a modern terracotta pot. Cast iron gutters and downpipes are present, along with timber barge boards to the dormers, which themselves are later additions, appearing by 1960. The external walls are roughcast. The windows are rectangular timber, featuring a top-hung vent above a fixed light in a 2 over 2 pattern, with vertical divisions. Ground floor windows were replaced in 1991 with larger windows, replacing the original small-paned, likely sliding sash windows. Stone cills are painted black. The rear elevation mirrors the front, with two flush roof lights, a slight verge overhang at the gable, and a later flat-roofed return to the left. An asphalt roof covers this return. Large, white-painted wooden windows with fixed lights and top-hung vents are found in the north and west walls. Two timber fixed light and side-hung casements on the rear wall appear to light ancillary rooms belonging to the adjacent Methodist church, though the blank walling and roof space above are part of this property. The west-facing gable has one window on the first floor, matching the entrance front. The building is part of a terrace of cottages attached to the side of a Methodist church, with a front garden bordered by the church and set back slightly from the main road, located in a rural setting and easily visible from the road. The house appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1902-3. Historic photographs within the Islandmagee Methodist Church show the building without dormers in 1940, with their addition by 1960, and show a neighbouring infill bay unbuilt in 1940. The building was delisted on 28 April 2000.
