Lime kiln at Portmuck Bay, Portmuck, Islandmagee, Larne, Co Antrim

This is a lime kiln, dating from approximately 1800 to 1819. It's an example of a once-common structure, now typically derelict, built into the hillside at Portmuck Bay, Islandmagee, near Larne in County Antrim. The kiln is constructed from limestone and basalt rubble, laid out in a rectangular plan. The front opening features a segmental arch made of red brick, which widens inwards. Within this arch is a smaller recessed arch, supporting a rusty iron girder positioned above the draw hole. Some areas are pointed with crude cement. The top of the kiln is covered in grass and enclosed by a barbed wire fence. It stands on its own in a rural location on a grassy bank, easily visible just above the beach. The kiln appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832 and was used for the small-scale burning of white limestone, or chalk, to produce a rough powder for various purposes. It is currently in a derelict condition and is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest.
