Description
The Limekiln Complex, located on the coast, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed from blue lias random rubble with brick dressings and features a row of four openings into an embankment that is about 20 meters high, positioned end on to the sea approximately 200 meters to the north. At the south end, there is an unusual pointed arch opening with segmental relieving arches leading to a concave kiln face. To the left, there is a square opening in the wall supported by iron joists, which is largely eroded. The center has two segmental headed openings, believed to contain lime kilns or storage bays, but these were inaccessible during the survey in December 1983 due to undergrowth. On the far left, another segmental headed opening leads to a kiln, with the north wall projecting about 2 meters. A corrugated iron single pitch roof forms a two-bay shelter shed, which has the remains of a doorframe inset. Despite being covered in undergrowth and ivy, this lime kiln complex is an interesting remnant of an important 18th and 19th century coastal trade.
