Description

The former School House, built between 1800 and 1819, stood off the east side of Castle Street, Antrim. Originally constructed in 1815 at the expense of Viscount Massereene, it served as a school. Castle Street was formerly known as Bow Lane, as shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1832 and 1857. The building was located behind the property that was formerly known as No 98 Castle Street, now replaced by a new property at No 4 Castle Street (distinct from the earlier building recorded as HB20/08/045).

The building, as described in a 1971 survey, was a two-storey house with harled walls and a hipped slated roof, four bays wide. It had unrecessed double-hung windows with sashes divided vertically into two panes. A timber porch sheltered the entrance.

The school is mentioned in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland (1832-9) and is referenced by A. Smyth in The Story of Antrim (1984), which mistakenly dates its establishment to 1812 and identifies it as an Erasmus School.

The building was demolished and the site remains vacant. It is not included in the list of buildings of group value.
