Castle Bar, 1 Market Square, Antrim

The Castle Bar stood on Market Square, Antrim, within the Town Parks townland. Based on mapping evidence, the building likely existed by 1832 and was probably constructed between 1840 and 1859. It was a two-storey corner building with a public house fronting onto the Market Square. The walls were rendered, with quoins marking the corners. The roof was slated, punctuated by two chimneys, one of which was built of modern brickwork. The upper floor had plain sash windows set within square, moulded architraves. The entrance on Castle Street was framed by an elliptical arch leading to a panelled door, which was flanked by three-pane sidelights and a fanlight featuring radial glazing. Number 2 Market Square, previously occupied by E. Craig Shoemaker, was incorporated into the building. The building was demolished and the site is now a landscaping scheme. It lay within the Antrim conservation area.
