Description

The Gatehouse, originally a toll-house and now a house, was built around 1842-1843 and extended around 1900. The front part features ashlar stonework, while the rear is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings. The building has hipped Welsh slate roofs with wide eaves supported by brackets, and both ashlar and brick chimneys.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a roadside elevation consisting of three bays. It has a plinth, pilaster strips at the corners and between each bay, and an eaves band. The paired semicircular arched windows have central plain stone mullions and imposts with arches, with 8-pane casement infills. The central lower bay, which was originally the front door, has a pointed arched head and matching details but is now filled with a 2-light window. Above this window is a wrought-iron bracket that once supported a fee-board. There are matching single-bay returns, with 3-light windows on both sides. The rear addition features plain sash windows and includes a single-storey canted bay with a hipped roof on the west side. The current entrance is located on the west side.

A notable feature is the ashlar stone wall that extends from the south-west corner, approximately 1.9 meters high and 15 meters long, with coping and a plain gateway near the house. This wall enhances the setting of the building and the overall streetscape. The gatehouse was likely built when the tollgate was relocated from Southover to this site in 1842-1843.
