Description
The Regal Cinema is a cinema built in 1935 by E.S. Roberts, showcasing a Moderne style. It features Flemish bond brickwork with stone copings and dressing, and the roof is concealed behind high parapets.
The entrance bay is angled between two return walls and has a canopy over glazed doors. Above the doors is a vertical 'REGAL' sign in stained glass set within a heavy ashlar architrave, which is stepped back in an Art Deco style and flanked by alternating brick and stone quoins. The walls project forward at an angle from the entrance bay to meet rusticated quoins and return walls, which are adorned with 3-light horizontal steel windows featuring stained glass arranged in geometric patterns typical of the Moderne style.
Inside, the cinema is particularly notable for the rare preservation of its original coloring, decoration, and fittings. The foyer boasts cornicing in pastel shades. The auditorium retains its original seating and features Art Deco fountain grilles flanking the proscenium arch, along with a polychromatic frieze above. The walls are covered in gold-colored acoustic plaster and are articulated by Art Deco pilasters leading to the cornicing, with concealed lighting enhancing the overall ambiance.
