Description
No. 4 Priory Road is a house that has been converted into a shop with offices above, dating from around 1800. It features fine-jointed red brickwork with Bath stone dressings and a Welsh slate roof behind a tall parapet, along with brick chimney stacks.
The exterior consists of three storeys and three bays, with a two-bay extension to the left. It has a stone plinth, rusticated pilasters, a cornice, and a plain coped parapet. On the ground floor, the first and third bays have 20th-century small-pane shop windows, while the second bay contains a pair of three-panel doors set within a stone doorcase that features Doric pilasters and a flat entablature with a hood. This doorcase is topped with a cast-iron rectangular fanlight. Above, there are sash windows with 12 panes on the first floor and 9 panes on the second floor, all with gauged brick flat arches. A legend over the door reads "Alexander Baily Licensed Brewing Victualler/Dealer in Foreign Spirits, Liquors and Tobacco," indicating the historical presence of the Baily family, who were involved in brewing in various locations in East Somerset and West Wiltshire.
The left extension is two storeys high and has a hipped slate roof without a parapet. It features a stone plinth and a rusticated corner pilaster, with blind openings on both levels of the first bay. The second bay has sash windows, with 12 panes on the ground floor and 9 panes on the first floor. The west side elevations are rendered, similar to the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
