Description
The gatehouse is a detached house that was formerly a toll house, built in the early 19th century. It features painted brickwork and a slate roof with a brick stack. The building has a plain block shape with an octagonal front facing the road and a low-pitched hipped roof that has a wide eaves overhang. There is a small flat-roofed extension on the left side. The gatehouse is two storeys tall, with each splayed face towards the road having a 25-pane sash window on each level. The front has a large blocked opening or panel above a 16-pane window that was once a door opening. The returns of the building have a centrally placed 25-pane window at the first floor, and on the south side, there is another window above the door set under the extension. The back of the building has casement windows. A central unpainted brick stack is present. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this toll house was relocated to its current site by 1839 from its original position, which was further north at the junction of the present road with Lower Lode Lane, where it had stood until 1829.
