Description

No. 47 is a house located in St. James Square, with origins in the 17th century and alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from coursed and squared rubble, featuring coped verges, brick stacks, and a thatched roof. It has an L-shaped plan and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a two-bay wing facing the road. The first floor has two 2-light casement windows with glazing bars, while the ground floor features 20th-century windows with leaded lights. The entrance has a door opening framed by a chamfered wooden architrave, leading to an attractive plank door with strap hinges, topped by a leaded wooden hood supported by elaborate shaped brackets. The return side of the house includes a 2-light wooden mullioned window with leaded lights in the gable face. Inside, there is a fireplace with a broad wooden bressumer and a bread oven, along with well-preserved 18th-century six-panelled doors.
