Description
The former walled garden south of Butleigh House dates from the 18th century and features walling made of blue lias and red brick. The wall runs for 36 meters along the east side of Sub Road, divided into two sections that are approximately 4 meters high. The roadside section is constructed from coursed and squared lias rubble, while the rear is faced in brick and topped with pantile cappings. It includes four slightly sloping buttresses, and at the north end, the wall ramps down to a gateway. The second section of the wall turns away from the road at a right angle, maintaining the same style, and is also about 4 meters high, with larger and shallower buttresses, extending approximately 45 meters. An additional section of the wall, built in Flemish bond red brick with narrow sloping buttresses, encloses the east side of the garden. The wall on the south side, which would have fully enclosed the garden, has been demolished.
