Description

Giles Cottage, also known as Half Thatch and Outwood Cottage, consists of two cottages. Half Thatch is dated 1736 according to deeds, although its core and Outwood Cottage are likely older. The buildings are constructed of plastered rubble and thatch, with brick stacks. They are single storey with attics and have a layout of 2:2 bays. Half Thatch features a ground floor casement window with 2 lights and glazing bars, along with two 3-light casements with iron opening frames on the first floor, both having bonnet-hoods. Outwood Cottage has 3-light casements with horizontal glazing bars, two of which are on the first floor and also have bonnet-hoods. There are two door openings: to the left is a 6-panelled door with the top two panels glazed, and to the right is a plank door. Half Thatch has a 20th-century lean-to at the rear. The interiors contain features of interest, including doors and fireplaces.
