Description
Lower Maunsell Lock No 3 and Lower Maunsell Bridge, also known as Maunsel Lock, were built between 1824 and 1827 and restored in the 20th century. The lock features a brick chamber and has two sets of double wooden gates with concrete balance beams. It includes counterweighted ground paddle gearing at the top, using metal ball weights, and counterweighted gate paddle gearing at the bottom, using metal cylindrical weights. This type of paddle gearing is unique to the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. The bridge across the lock tail is made of brick and has a single horseshoe arch, a band, a solid parapet with brick coping, and piers topped with stone coping. The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal was engineered by James Hollinsworth during its construction.
