Description

The Church of St. Michael is an Anglican church located in North Petherton. It has Norman origins, with parts dating back to the 15th century and some work from the 18th century. The church was restored and extended in 1868 for the Slade family of Maunsel House. It features random rubble construction with freestone dressings, buttresses, and roofs made of tile and slate, adorned with crested ridges.

The church has a nave that connects to a continuous chancel, with narrow North and South aisles and a squat North tower porch at the west end of the aisle. The architectural style is predominantly Perpendicular, with some 19th-century work in the Early English style. The tower has a pyramidal roof and slit windows beneath the eaves, while the North doorway features paired panelled doors. The East and West windows are three-light, with the East window being square-headed and the West window pointed-headed; the other openings are lancets.

Inside, the church has a plastered interior with tile floors and no chancel arch, featuring a continuous plastered wagon roof over the nave and chancel, and two-bay arcades in the North and South aisles. A notable feature is the octagonal 15th-century font. There are numerous memorials to the Slade family, particularly three from the early 19th century located in the North aisle. The fittings, including pews, an altar table, a lectern, a reredos, and an organ, were added after the restoration. The East window and South aisle contain mid-19th-century stained glass. Additionally, there is a 17th-century monument and a 19th-century charity plaque under the tower, along with a bell dated 1670.
