Description

Mansell House is an early 19th-century house constructed from red sandstone random rubble masonry, featuring cement quoins and a plinth. It has a hipped slate roof and brick stacks on the right side. The main elevation faces west towards the garden, with a secondary entrance on the south side along Fore Street, where a raised pavement leads to a service wing. The house is two stories over a basement and has three bays, with 12-pane sash windows. A central hipped slate roof porch includes a four-panel door and six-pane sidelights, with nine-light returns.

The right return elevation, which flanks Fore Street, has two bays and features a blocked window above a six-panel door, with 12-pane sash windows to the left. There is a segmental-headed opening just above pavement level with an iron grill set into the angle opening into the pavement. All openings are framed with rusticated cement surrounds. The early 19th-century cast iron railings, designed with a spearhead motif, are set on a low stone plinth and enclose the garden on the south front. The railings rise up to a gate of similar design at the southeast corner. Mansell House is part of a group with Gages and Barbrook to the east, and it is believed that the three were originally built as one property.
