Description

Burge Farm Farmhouse, located to the northeast of Tone Vale Hospital, is a farmhouse with a rear wing dating from the late 17th century and a front range built around 1720, which has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed of red sandstone, with all but one elevation rendered, and features a timber-framed interior. The front range has a 19th-century slated, pitched roof with overhanging, bracketed eaves and chimney stacks on both gables. The rear wing has a hipped roof, with corrugated iron replacing thatch, which continues over an outshoot that includes a dormer on the left and two brick stacks, supported by joggled purlins. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an H-plan layout. The front range includes three windows, with 20th-century glazing in the original openings and a central glazed 20th-century porch. The rear range features a first-floor, four-light ovolo mullioned window with a moulded frame and one shutter on the gable end, as well as a similar window with one moulded mullion on the ground floor. Inside, there is a 19th-century patterned tiled floor in the central entrance hall, along with a late 17th-century open-string staircase with a column newel, stick balusters, and a wreathed handrail. The rooms are characterized by stop-chamfered spine beams, with most having wide floorboards.
