Description

Old Hall is a farmhouse, now a private house, likely dating from the early to mid-17th century. It was extended in the mid-17th century and remodelled around 1700. The building is constructed of stone rubble with granite quoins, and has a rag slate roof with gable ends and brick end stacks. A rear wing is located to the left, also with a gable end and brick end stack.

The original plan is uncertain. The rear wing has details from the mid-17th century, while the front range showcases late 17th or 18th century plasterwork and panelling. However, the presence of granite quoins on the left-hand gable end suggests the front range is older than the rear wing; a thick stone wall separates the two ranges. The front range follows a two-room and central entrance plan, originally heated by end stacks and likely featuring a cross passage and stair in a projection to the rear. To the rear of the left-hand room is a one-room wing, heated by a gable end stack. Around 1798, an outshot extension was added to the rear of the right-hand room, subsequently remodelled into a continuous range. This incorporated the stair projection from the rear of the front range and the right-hand gable end was likely rebuilt during this phase.

The house is two storeys high, with a partial cellar. The front elevation presents a symmetrical appearance with five window bays, featuring dressed stone segmental arches over the ground floor openings. These openings now contain renewed 20th-century 12-pane sashes. A central entrance is marked by an 18th-century six-panel door that has been widened. The rear wing to the left has pairs of 20th-century metal frame windows and late 19th-century six-pane sashes above, both with bowtell-moulded timber lintels.

The front range retains complete early 18th-century moulded plaster cornices on the ground floor, a moulded oval ceiling panel with a central floral motif in the right-hand room, and an early 19th-century hob grate (with a 20th-century replacement chimneypiece). Raised and fielded panelling appears above the fireplace, and there are two circa early 18th-century china cupboards. The left-hand room has 18th-century raised and fielded cupboard doors. Slate flag floors are present. A mid-20th-century stair is also incorporated. Bedrooms in the front range have complete late 17th or early 18th-century plaster cornices of ovolo and cyma recta section. The left-hand bedroom has a bolection moulded chimney-piece, and the right-hand bedroom early 18th-century raised and fielded panelled cupboard doors. The rear wing features chamfered floor joists with straight cut stops; the bedroom above has a chamfered timber lintel over the fireplace. The roof structure was replaced in the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Old Hall is an unspoiled farmhouse with unusually complete early 18th-century detailing, situated near other farmhouses at Treburgett, namely Aarons and Paul's Tenement.
