Description

Bridge Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed from red sandstone random rubble and features a slate roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles and bargeboards. The building has brick stacks located at the right gable end, to the left of the cross passage. The farmhouse has a T-plan layout, with the main block on the right consisting of three cells and a cross passage, and a long cross gable on the left that ends in a barn at the rear.

The structure is one and a half storeys tall and has a 1:3 bay arrangement. The openings have raised surrounds, and there are 16-pane sash windows in the gabled cross wing on the left, along with a blocked 12-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window on the ground floor to the right. Similar windows can be found at the re-entrant angle, while other windows are 2-light casements. The gabled dormers also feature decorative bargeboards. The entrance is located in the second bay on the right and consists of a panelled door.

Inside, the farmhouse has chamfered beams with step and run-out stops, and the central beam in the room to the left of the cross passage has scroll stops. The rear wing contains steeply chamfered beams, although other rooms were not viewed. The front cross wing on the left is likely a 19th-century addition and contains a stair with a reset ovolo-moulded mullion. The farmhouse forms a group with the farm buildings to the west, representing an unusual survival of a farm close to the centre of town.
