Description
The standing cross, located 8 meters southeast of St John the Baptist Church, dates from the medieval period and was restored around 1869. It is made from sandstone and Hamstone and has an octagonal shape.
The cross features an octagonal base with two steps, a square socket stone, and a square shaft, although the head is missing. The corners of the socket stone are shaped into square angle shafts that have caps and fillet moulding. The tapering shaft has beveled corners and fillet mouldings at its base. It stands at a height of 1.9 meters, where it is broken off.
The east face of the cross is decorated with a crocketted niche that contains a headless male figure dressed in flowing robes, standing on an eroded angel corbel. The angel is believed to be holding a shield with a wreath below. While this detail was noted in the late 19th century by Pooley in 1877, the carvings have become weathered by 2016.
