Description

Blake's Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with enlargements made in the 17th to 18th centuries and a restoration in the late 20th century. The building features roughcast over cob and rubble, with a thatched roof that is half hipped to the left and a central brick stack. The plan suggests it may have originally been a single-cell gable entry that was later enlarged to two cells, oriented northeast to southwest.

The cottage is one and a half storeys tall, with all 20th-century casements. It has a two-light dormer that rises from the eaves on the right, a small central stairlight window, and two casements on the ground floor flanking two raking buttresses at the center. The entrance is through a plank door located at the end right, which is sheltered by a thatched hooded porch. There is also a single-storey 20th-century addition on the right return.

Inside, the cottage features a chamfered lintel above the fireplace, stairs to the left, and a peaked doorframe between rooms. An axial chamfered beam with step and run-out stops and a lateral chamfered beam can be found in the room behind the stack. Although the upper storey was not inspected, it is said to contain one jointed cruck, possibly rising from ground level. Recent restoration work uncovered rubble piers at the corners of the left gable end and adjoining wooden shuttering to the cob walls, which may indicate a previous linhay that was part of the cottage's enlargement.
