Description

Abbey Farmhouse is a farmhouse with probable origins in the 16th century, possibly incorporating masonry from Merevale Abbey. It features a front range from the late 18th or early 19th century, along with some alterations. The building is constructed of regularly coursed sandstone, with some brick patching on the rear wing. The front range retains remnants of render and has old plain-tile roofs, with brick end stacks and an internal stack in the rear wing. The layout is an irregular T-plan, with a long wing at the rear.

The symmetrical front range is two storeys high with an attic and consists of three bays. The gabled center projects slightly, and the entrance features a four-panelled door with a two-light overlight above. The windows are leaded wood mullioned with arched lights and pierced spandrels, arranged in three lights and two lights for the center and attic. All openings have gauged brick flat arches and brick dressings. The attic includes two gabled half-dormers.

To the left, the irregular rear wing is one storey high with an attic and has a three-window range. It features a large three-light leaded wood mullioned and transomed window with a wood lintel on the right, along with smaller 19th-century windows. The 19th-century dormers have two-light casements with horizontal glazing bars. The end wall includes an external staircase leading to a plank door.

Inside, there is a straight-flight staircase parallel to the front, featuring stick balusters. The room to the right has a cut-down mid to late 18th-century style carved wood fireplace, while the room to the left contains a large open fireplace. The rear room has a moulded and carved stone fireplace inscribed with "JA February" on the left and "TL 1797" on the right. The kitchen in the rear wing has cross beams and a large open fireplace with a boxed bressumer and moulded cornice. Most beams throughout the house are boxed. On the first floor, the room on the right has a late 18th-century style carved fireplace adorned with husk garlands.
