Description

The Gate House is a house, likely originally a rectory, built between 1848 and 1849 by Henry Clutton for William Stratford Dugdale of Merevale Hall. It is constructed from regular coursed rough-faced sandstone and features a splay plinth. The plain-tile roofs have moulded coped gable parapets with stepped and moulded kneelers, and the stone end and ridge stacks have square shafts with continuous cornices. The building is arranged in a U-shape with wings at the rear and has two storeys with a three-window range.

The main front facing the garden includes a slightly projecting gabled cross-wing on the left. The ground floor is designed as a bay window with a configuration of 1-3-1 lights at the front and single lights on the return sides, complemented by a splay string course. Above this, there is a window with four stepped lights, where the two central lights have a transom and a hood mould. The second bay features a four-light window with a hood mould and a segmental relieving arch, with a three-light window above it.

On the right side, there is a two-storey canted bay with a 1-2-1 light arrangement and a steep pyramidal roof topped with a finial. The ground floor windows throughout have transoms. The right return side has an external stack at the first floor, while a lower wing to the right is set back. A gabled porch at the angle projects slightly beyond the left range and contains a nine-panelled Tudor-arched door with a stop-chamfered surround and a hood mould. To the right of the door, there is a two-light staircase window with a central transom and glazing bars, along with a three-light window that has a hood mould and relieving arch; a dormer above features a two-light window. Beyond this, a one-storey range includes three-light and one-light windows, and a large external stack with splay and two shafts. The interior has not been inspected.
