Description

The terraces, steps, and parterre kerbs at Merevale Hall are notable landscape features likely designed by Edward Blore or Henry Clutton in the 1840s, with additional work by W.A. Nesfield around 1850. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the south-east terrace consists of eight bays, each with stone pedestals that support white stone vases featuring handles on paired bearded heads and fluted stems, which were acquired from Drayton Manor, Staffordshire, around 1926. The fifth bay includes a flight of steps, flanked by pedestals with cartouches and two vases on each side. The two parterre beds on the terrace are designed with elaborate patterns and have stone kerbs. The terraces to the north-east and west are characterized by high retaining walls and coped parapets. The north-east side features an outer staircase with an Elizabethan-style arcaded balustrade, while the north-west side has a lower central section that includes additional Drayton Manor vases. These elements contribute to a formal garden layout designed by W.A. Nesfield around 1850.
