Description
Patwell House is a house built in the 19th century, located on Patwell Street in Bruton. It is constructed from local stone that has been rendered and colourwashed, with Doulting stone dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate, hipped at the south end and featuring a plain gable at the north end, along with yellow brick chimney stacks. The house has two storeys and three bays, with a plinth, a band, and simple eaves courses. Each bay has flat pilasters topped with Doric capitals. The tall windows include 16-pane sashes on the ground floor and 12-pane sashes on the upper floor. The central entrance features part-glazed double doors that are margined and set into a semi-circular arched recess, topped with an ornate fanlight. There are wing walls on both sides of the entrance; the north side has a 4-centre arched gateway, while the south side has a blind recess that conceals a later building. Patwell House was built around 1860 for Dr. Higginbotham when he established his medical practice, utilizing the cellars and underground kitchens of an earlier structure.
