Description
Somerlea Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century and later. It is constructed from local stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a plain clay tile roof with coped gables supported by carved kneeler stones. The building has 2 storeys and an attic, arranged in an "L" plan. The south elevation has 2 bays, with a return to the east. Most windows are reconstructed stone mullioned windows from the 20th century, except for the upper window of the eastward return, which is a 3-light ovolo mould mullioned window without a label, featuring leaded lights and a central wrot iron casement. There is a 20th-century cambered arch doorway. The south gable of the return has a 3-light ovolo-mould mullioned window on both the ground and first floors, and a 2-light window in the attic, all with diamond leaded panes.
Inside, the farmhouse includes several stopped and run-out chamfered beams, a well-crafted moulded cambered arched fireplace with incised spandrels, elaborate chamfer stops, and an overmantel shelf that has been repositioned from a room above. There is a C11 safe with a wooden door and frame in the side of the chimney breast, and above it, a transitional plank and muntin partition. The roof frame consists of pegged collar-trusses with tenoned purlins, spanning 5 bays. The west wing was nearly completely rebuilt in the 1970s. The property was first mentioned in an indenture from 1679.
